Writing Vs. Speaking
In the world of online business, you have to find effective ways to reach your audience while establishing expertise. As you are learning, you may start getting anxious thinking that you’ll never have time to do it all and, by the way, you really hate public speaking. Then your confidence is shot because you feel like you’re going to fail because you can’t do everything.
But the truth is, there really is only one way to reach your audience, and that is to generate content.
Content is king
Content comes in a variety of forms – from video, to voice, to written text, to graphics, and more. Everything you see online is content, and content has been used throughout time to promote and teach others. Content is all there is. Generating content about any topic on a regular basis that your audience consumes will push you to expert status eventually.
Now, of course, there are tons of forms of content that you can use and generate – from writing to speaking to combinations of the two. And yes, if you use more than one method, you’ll reach more people in your audience faster.
Everyone learns in a different way
Some people like reading, some people like listening, some people need a more entertaining video to keep their attention.
However, you don’t need to force yourself to use any type of method to establish your expertise that feels inauthentic or that you hate doing.
Personally, I find video to be the format that can hold my attention the longest but creating videos is not something I can do well, so I write.
Be Yourself
It’s important that you choose the way to reach and engage with your audience that you enjoy and makes you shine. That’s going to be the way that is easiest for you to do. When you do that, regardless of what the gurus say, you’ll be successful. You’ll be successful because you’re going to actually do it. Remember implementation, more than how, is the key to success.
Yes, some of your audience might not find you because they’re looking for videos or a podcast if you choose only to using writing – but you can still be just as successful.
Play to Your Strengths
For some people, the main way they prefer to reach people is via their writing. For others, it’s via speaking gigs, and you only need to do it one way, not all ways, to be successful. It’s important to play to your strengths.
If you’re good at writing, do that. If you’re good at speaking, do that. However, it is also important to think about your audience. If the audience you want to work with likes public speaking, but it sends you into a panic attack, you may want to figure out a new audience if you cannot overcome the issue.
You don’t have to do anything you don’t want to do when it comes to generating plenty of content that establishes your expertise. However, it’s generally understood that establishing expertise occurs based on the reach of the content that you distribute to your audience. Therefore, ensure that your chosen method is the best one for the audience you want to work with.
Once you’ve been established, you may want to be more eager to leave your comfort zone and try something new. If you’re a writer, you will get invitations to speak in public, and if you’re a speaker, you will also get to write blog posts. Don’t shy away from these invitations when they happen. It’s a sign that you broke through and have indeed established your expertise in your own way.
